Manhattan is best wandered in the cool of autumn. I walked from Central Park to Grand Central Terminal, with towers rising overhead like a forest and only a narrow blade of sky above. I bought a warm pretzel from a street cart, stepped back to a corner, and watched people in colored clothes hurry past. The city is prosperous and loud, but if you stand still and observe it calmly, there is a kind of hidden quiet inside the crowd.
