Kyoto’s beauty only appears when you slow down. The Kamo River in the morning, the Philosopher’s Path in the afternoon, the alleys of Gion at night - every place feels carefully polished.
I walked for an hour through the thousand torii gates of Fushimi Inari. The orange wooden pillars kept switching light and shadow in the sun, like turning the pages of a giant book that never ends.
By the time I reached the top, dusk was near. The Kyoto basin spread out below, distant mountains washed in pale blue, city lights turning on one by one.
On the way down, almost no one was around. I could hear only my own footsteps and, from somewhere far off, the bell of a temple I could not see. In that moment I thought: so this is what an ancient capital feels like.
