Walking through the streets of Queenstown, Lake Wakatipu looked like a vast blue gemstone, flashing with a cold, deep light among the peaks of the Southern Alps.
This is a paradise for adventurers and a refuge for solitary souls. In the morning, mist hangs like gauze over the Remarkables, and the clear air carries a slight chill straight into the lungs. Sitting on a lakeside bench, I watched gulls skim low over the transparent water while a steamship moved slowly in the distance, trailing white smoke. Time seemed to switch to a slower speed here.
When sunset turned the mountain ridges a soft powdered gold, the lights of the small town came on one by one. From a nearby corner came the smell of hot coffee and roasted lamb. Noise and stillness blend perfectly here. Queenstown’s beauty is not in any single arranged view, but in the purity and vastness that rushes toward you the moment you open a window.
